Remember in the 90’s when they started to advertise for depression?
They put ads everywhere on TV, billboards, buses, radio and even movie scripts to change people’s mind on the matter, back in the day when most weren’t into therapies and pills.
First it started with “Depression is an illness. It’s not your fault.”
Then it moved up to “It can’t be cured, but it can be treated.”
Then it finally became “Pills and therapies are the solutions.”
Now, these affirmations have been accepted by everyone as indisputable truths. In fact, here’s what people think on the matter from the comments on my article on antidepressants:
Accepting that I have a chronic, incurable and deadly disease of the mind was the hardest thing I have ever done.
The 150 mg pill I take every day has saved my life, and without it, each day is a fight.
Depression and other mental disorders are biological, chemical issues; you cannot simply “fix” them and be “free forever.”
The whole idea of clinical depression is that it’s not caused by events in your life. It’s a chemical imbalance and thus can occur no matter how great or sucky your life may be.
These sum up very well the consensus on depression now. So there’s this disease that cripples nearly half the population and it’s a chemical imbalance that comes out of nowhere, according to those who are in the business.
Pause and think for a minute. So you’re telling me. That you believe other people just like you, who grew up watching the same TV as you, playing in a schoolyard similar to yours, eating the same kind of popsicles you did, who wake up every morning and go to bed with the same fears, biases, agendas like you, without questioning?
That these people who convinced you that you have an incurable disease, under the name of science, are the same people who are selling you products and services to make profits off of your “disease” that requires a lifetime treatment, under the pretence that it’s right for you? And you’re telling me that your gut doesn’t react?
Depression is a scam
If a priest told you that God is the almighty creator of the universe, that he has a unique connection with God, that he studied God and he knows God better than you, and he convincingly and intently told you, with his hands on your shoulders, that God wants you to suck his dick, wouldn’t you suspect a conflict of interest?
You’ve got to wake up altar boys. Science has become your religion and doctors, the intermediaries between you and the truth. All this effort to convince you that you have no power, no will, no freedom, no control over your life, that you need something external to save you, something that of course they’re selling, is nothing more than a scam.
Listen to me my dudes, you’re not sick. If you hate your job, your friends are losers, your wife’s a cunt and society thinks you’re disposable, the correct medical term for your condition is your life sucks.
Your horrible feeling is a consequence of it, not a cause. The solution is not to take a pill and talk about it, it’s to take action and change your situation.
Don’t be a victim
I get it, you don’t want to be judged and you don’t want people to be hard on you because it adds to your misery. So there’s this tempting solution: declare yourself sick and get sympathy. Get instant results: judgment will be tamed, expectations will be lowered and less pressure will be put on your shoulders.
But what the doctors won’t tell you is that this trap comes at the cost of becoming somebody. Victims remain victims.
They often make it a profession, wearing their pain and suffering as some kind of badge of honor they can show to people whenever things get rough. They might not feel as much pressure as those who take matters into their own hands, but sympathy is all they ever get.
Pain is good
Life is hard, you got in trouble somehow and you’re in a bad position. You don’t want to feel the pain, the burden of your own mind pestering you to do something about it. You don’t want your past haunting you.
Doctors like to give it fancy names like depression or anxiety, call it a disease and try to cure it, but “depression” is not a disease. It’s normal to feel very unhappy if your life just fucking sucks. It’s not wise to circumvent your body’s natural reaction to try to be happy when you simply shouldn’t be.
Pain is telling you that something needs to change. It’s the nagging voice inside you that tells you to wake up and go after what you want.
It’s your pride. You need to listen to it. If you take a pill to dull it, you will lose the part of yourself that will make you get off your ass.
You got the power
The greater your anger and restlessness, the greater the power that lies dormant inside you. Truly unhappy people are like so because they know deep inside they were born for a lot more than they are currently doing. Average people are just content with the minimum.
You need to use that talent and power. Get them out by developing the qualities that makes someone successful. Be courageous and face your fears and adversity without running away. Be resilient and don’t break down. Be smart and adapt to different complex situations. Be creative and come up with novel solutions to problems. Keep your head high and take action. You can do it.
Your job is unbearable? Find a better one instead of coming home angry every day.
Think your spouse isn’t good enough for you? Dump them, there are billions of people on Earth.
Tired of being fat and ugly? Go to the gym or train in the park for free.
Have an unachieved project you think about every day? Start working towards it now and make it happen. Now.
These actions will have a far greater impact on you than whatever pills or therapies you will ever get. You will start to remember what truly bothers you as you start taking care of it. You will actually fix the real causes of your misery.
You will stay away from the bitch mentality and finally become who you are supposed to be.
